Remember, remember, Cup Day in November!

leave a comment »

Today is Melbourne Cup Day AND Guy Fawkes Day/Night. Not very often do these dates intertwine, so in commemoration of these dates coinciding:

Remember, remember!
Cup Day in November
In Flemington the horses all trot
You will be a grinner
If you’ve picked a winner
Champagne you’ll drink a lot!

Being Australian

leave a comment »

Happy Australia Day everybody! Here’s a reworking of Australia’s unofficial anthem, from the point of view from a non-Aussie who’s lived in Australia for the past 10 years:

Being Australian (to the tune of Banjo Patterson’s “Waltzing Matilda”)

Only in Au-stray-lia will you find a way of life

And culture defined as “being Aussie”

Mateship and having a go as the underdog

And lots of beaut blokes and sheilas to see!

Being Australian, Living in Australia

Driving in a ute or Volkswagon kombi

Make yourself a sanger, smeared with lots of vegemite

Culture we know that’s uniquely Aussie

Au-stray-lia is home to lots of unique expressions

Lingo and strange slang such as “No worries!”

From “G’day mate”, “Fair Dinkum”, and someone having a “Fair Go”

Come, “throw a shrimp on the barbie” with me!

Being Australia, Slang in Australia

“Strewth”, “Bloody Oath”; terms used by girls and boys

And the chant that identifies the Aussies standing in a crowd

“Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi!”

Music and arts and sport are all significant

To the Australian way of living

Akka Dakka, The Wiggles, Dame Edna and Steve Irwin,

Let’s all go watch the footy at the ‘G!

Being Australian, Culture in Australia

Bradman, Rod Laver, Phar Lap: sporting greats

Farnham, Cold Chisel and Kylie on the radio

Your turn to buy a pot of beer for your mates!

Only in Australia will you find exclusive wildlife

Fauna that’s indigenous to this land

Koalas and kangaroos and the oddly shaped platypus

Also snakes and spiders dangerous to man!

Being Australian, Living in Australia

Customs and laws that you have to obey

To protect the flora and fauna of this native land

Adhere to these rules if you want to stay!

Happy Chinese New Year 2012

leave a comment »

“Genuine” Ancient Chinese proverb (from unmarried juniors to their married or elderly seniors):

Congratulations and be prosperous, now shower me with money.

To all my readers, wishing you:

新年快乐, 恭喜发财, 萬事如意

(which loosely translates to “Happy New Year”, “Congratulations and be prosperous”, and “May your wishes be fulfilled”)

Happy Chinese New Year 2012!

For auld acquaintance to be forgot

leave a comment »

Happy New Year everybody! Apologies for the lack of posts over the holiday season, but I’ve been taking a much needed break.

To ring in the new year (albeit three days late now!), here’s a reworking of a classic sung at the stroke of midnight to celebrate the start of a new year.

There’s a strong drinking culture in Australia and a lot of people get stinking drunk…especially when ringing in the New Year. So here’s my take on the New Year drinking culture:

For auld acquaintance to be forgot (to the tune of “Auld Lang Syne”)

For auld acquaintance to be forgot

And never brought to mind

That means you’ll need another shot

Here, come and drink more wine!

Your mem’ry’s unaligned, my dear

Forget you’re in decline

More drink, to fuel your mem’ry loss

Stagg’ring to the finishing line

And surely you’ll buy another round

And I won’t know when to draw the line

Falling off my chair and hitting the ground

Thinking I am on cloud nine!

The coppers come to pick me up

To a jail I am confined

A drunken stupor I’m still in

To my fate I am consigned

The reason for Christmas

leave a comment »

Merry Christmas everybody! An original poem from me:

“Remember this day,” said the three men so wise
“Today is the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Gold, frankincense and myrrh they did bring
To present to the king of kings

And if religion isn’t quite your thing
There are the many carols that one can sing
Feasting and spending time with family
Drinking eggnog ‘round the Christmas tree

Under the mistletoe lovers can kiss
Of past Christmases grandparents reminisce
For the kids there’s Santa and his reindeer
Delivering presents and spreading Christmas cheer

Whatever your reason to have a good time may be
Christmas is a season to be celebratory
The season of Christmas keeps all of us enthralled
A blessed and Merry Christmas to one and all!

If it weren’t for that damned John McClane

leave a comment »

In tribute of one of the best movies ever set on Christmas Eve (and one of the best movies of all time):

If it weren’t for that damned John McClane (to the tune of “Let it snow”)

Oh the Gruber clan is so greedy

And their eyes are shifty and beady

And they’d be sipping champagne

If it weren’t for that damned John McClane!

Hans tries to rob Nakatomi

With his German team of cronies

But his plans are all in vain

All because of that damned John McClane!

When Hans finally meets McClane

He doesn’t really have much to say

Stopping Hans’ terrorist campaign

John yells out: “Yippee-Ki-Yay!”

Simon Gruber wants revenge

His bro’s death he wants to avenge

But the Grubers’ poor record’s maintained

Both were killed by that damned John McClane!

I’m a gnome on Christmas

leave a comment »

I’m a gnome on Christmas (to the tune of “I’ll be home for Christmas”)

I’m decorative; colours painted bright

And my face is chubby and round

And while revellers feast on Christmas Eve

I guard the grounds

I’m a gnome on Christmas

In your garden bed

I am on the grass in your lawn

And sometimes kept in the shed

Sometimes I will travel

The world in “Amelie”

I’m a gnome on Christmas

Next to the lawn jockey

I am ornamental

Just a garden dwarf

I’m a gnome on Christmas

Protecting garden troughs

Insects I do fend off
